Joy of Eid al-Adha in the char areas 2026

Joy of Eid al-Adha in the char areas 2026

Date: June 6, 2026

Eid al-Adha is a celebration of sacrifice, gratitude, and sharing happiness with loved ones. Across cities and villages, the festive atmosphere comes alive with the sacrifice of animals, the distribution of meat, and joyful gatherings. However, this picture of celebration is not the same everywhere. In the vast char (river island) regions of Kurigram, there are countless families for whom Eid is not about new clothes or enjoying sacrificial meat, but rather about the daily struggle to survive.

Many of the people living on these chars, formed along the Brahmaputra River, have lost their homes, farmland, and livelihoods to relentless river erosion. Due to difficult transportation, limited employment opportunities, and long-standing poverty, the joy of Eid often remains out of reach for them. While many poor families in urban areas receive portions of sacrificial meat from individuals and organizations, numerous families in the remote char regions remain deprived of such opportunities year after year. Some families get the chance to eat beef only once a year, during Eid al-Adha.

Recognizing this reality, Alhaj Shamsul Hoque Foundation has been organizing Qurbani programs for the underprivileged people of Kurigram’s char areas for several years. Inspired by this humanitarian initiative, generous donors from both home and abroad have extended their support according to their abilities. Through their contributions, the Foundation purchased a total of 52 cattle and goats this year, including 45 goats, which were sacrificed and distributed among hundreds of disadvantaged families living in the char regions.

Qurbani teaches us not only the value of sacrifice but also our responsibility toward society, compassion for others, and the strengthening of brotherhood. The true beauty of Eid is realized when the neglected and underprivileged members of society are also able to share in its joy.

This initiative by Alhaj Shamsul Hoque Foundation is more than a meat distribution program. It is an effort to stand beside those in need, to share in their happiness during Eid, and to spread the message of humanity and solidarity. Thanks to the heartfelt support and generosity of donors, countless smiles will once again brighten the faces of people living in the remote char areas of Kurigram this Eid.

Those smiling faces in Kurigram’s char communities remind us that the true spirit of Qurbani lies not merely in the sacrifice itself, but in bringing joy, dignity, and hope to the hearts of others.
